It is the second largest municipality for population in Sicily after Palermo and the centre of the largest conurbation in Sicily. It is one of the fifteen Italian metropolitan cities, the tenth of the Italian cities for population and also the most populous non-capital city of Italy.

Nowadays, only a small part of the landscape, admired by Goethe in 1787, has changed and the Valley of Temples is the most popular and praised part of Agrigento. Inside the Valley, there are several monuments; this is what remains of the ancient city of Akragas, which was founded in the sixth century BC by settlers who came from Gela, thus becoming, in a hundred years, “the mortals’ most beautiful city” (Pindaro).
Destroyed by the Carthaginians in 406, was refounded by Timoleonte in 340 BC. Under his control, the city had new moments of brilliance, even if he was heading for the decline, which has become final with the Byzantines.

The city of Ragusa boasts ancient origins. The hill of Ibla was in fact inhabited since the fourteenth century BC by the Sicilians who left numerous archeological finds in the area (oven tombs, caves dug into the rock. etc …).

Maniace Castle – It rises imposingly on the seafront of Ortigia. It was built by Frederick II in 1239 The castle, which combines military architecture with the elegance of a court, it still retains the outer structure of the thirteenth century, a square, with massive corner towers.

Piazza Armerina is linked to the Roman Villa of Casale, one of the most important archaeological discoveries of Sicily. It was built in the third or fourth century dC by an unknown customer.
Whoever it was, the owner of the villa was a very rich man, who loved luxury, convenience, and art. For the decoration of its prestigious country residence that had good mosaic artists who came from Africa for five years and are dedicated to creating beautiful mosaics that still give us a vivid picture of Roman life and mythology.
Covering an area of about 3,500 square meters, there is a sequence of scenes of hunting and dancing, mythological characters and animals, fishing and all kinds of plants and fruits, models, and leader of a style of mosaics in the following centuries it spread in Italy, France and Spain.

Palermo is a city of contrasts. Here you can find the poorest food served in the most elegant tables or you can eat kebab and “stigghiole” at any time of the day or night.
Visiting the city’s main streets, you can admire the palaces, tangible evidence of an ancient pomp, behind which lies a maze of alleys, courtyards and houses huddled together.

Palermo’s historic centre has its heart in the octagonal square Vigliena, better known as the Quattro Canti, which is the symbolic geometric centre of Palermo, founded in 1600. The Royal Palace, called “Norman”, because it reached its maximum splendor in the Norman period, has got several rooms full of fabulous mosaics, such as “Sala dei Venti”, and “Sala d’Ercole”, where, still nowadays, the Sicilian Parliament gathers. Inside the palace stands the Palatine Chapel, a splendid example of harmony among the different cultures who lived in Sicily, where you can admire the Byzantine mosaics, the wooden ceilings inlaid by the Arabs and the Easter Candelabrum, wonderful sculptural Masterpiece made by Palermo’s craftsmen.
Continuing towards the sea, we will meet, on our left hand side, enclosed between two towers, the majestic Cathedral, which is the evident proof of the various eras and conflicting styles.

At about 8 km from Palermo, in the town of Monreale, located in the beautiful Arab-Norman style cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Modica is one of the most picturesque cities of the province of Sicily. It is located in the southern area of the Iblean mountains and is divided into two areas: Modica Alta, whose buildings are almost climbing the mountain rocks, and Modica Bassa, down in the valley, where once two rivers Ianni Mauro and Pozzo dei pruni, then covered because of frequent floods, and where it is now the Corso Umberto, the main street and historic center of the city.
The aspect is mainly the late Baroque, dating back to the aftermath of the earthquake (1693). What makes the city so unique and fascinating is, first of all, the baroque aspect, of which the urban design and historic center of Modica abound; also the presence of violet and picturesque narrow streets, full of old shops, huts or rich palaces.
It’s a great little town, rich in historical and artistic, easily visited on a weekend. I’m sure to see the church of San Giorgio, a wonderful church in Sicilian baroque style.
Of great value is then also the church of San Pietro which has beautiful especially the huge staircase that lies ahead with all the statues of the apostles. Next to the church and the stairs leading to the castle of the Counts and the Clock Tower, you arrive at the church of St. Nicholas Lower, symbol of rock-cut architecture (very nice frescoes inside).
The city is surrounded by three hills, under the limestone cliffs that seem to protect it. During the clear days an incomparable spectacle is offered, a city lying in the valley like a cast of houses. Down on the horizon, one can glimpse one of the bluest seas in the Mediterranean, which closes this unique and serene setting. From the center of the village, in Piazza Italia, looking up on the right we see an imposing limestone cliff on which stands St. Matthew the ancient Mother Church of the ancient city, behind San Matteo we can see the remains of what was the Tre Cantoni Castle. while on the next hill we can admire the Convent of the Cross. The panorama that can be enjoyed from up there is not able to describe, you have the feeling of dominating the whole territory without effort.
The historic center is of Baroque style like the rest of the Iblei centers. Among the many churches and noble palaces, the Church of San Ignazio, known as the Matrice or del Collegio church, is located in Piazza Italia. On the same square stands Palazzo Fava, a classic example of Baroque architecture of the 700 from the wide portal and the beautiful balconies. Enna, is the highest provincial capital of Italy, is located in the center of Sicily, in the highest part of a wide mountain ridge, which rises above the Dittaino valley and is part of the mountain range of the Erei mountains.
Thanks to its long history, Enna can boast a monumental heritage of the largest and most varied in the region, and some artistic and architectural treasures of a certain value. Most of the places of interest are located along the road axis of Via Roma, which runs through the historic center of the city. It starts from piazza Neglia, where stands the church of San Tommaso, and, passing through the five largest squares of Enna Alta, ends at the castle of Lombardy, the most important monument. With its 26,000 m² of surface it is one of the biggest medieval castles in Italy. The Tower of Frederick II, part of the ancient defensive system called “Castello Vecchio”, is one of the symbols of the city of Enna. Maria Santissima della Visitazione (Duomo), the beautiful cathedral of Enna, a few steps from the Castle, is one of the most important architectural works of the city. Its wealth of styles, the frescoes of the Borremans, the Gothic interiors with Catalan influences and its history dating back to the Middle Ages are certainly worth a visit. Belvedere, the belvedere is a historic panoramic square of Enna. The masonry structures in the center of the square have been interpreted as a sanctuary (V-III century BC) dedicated to underground divinities, those to the east as a long granary, while beyond the granary there were some furnaces for the ceramic production. In Aidone, about 5 km from Morgantina, there is the Regional Archaeological Museum, which houses the beautiful Venus of Morgantina, a classic sculpture often exhibited in the most famous museums in the world.
Selinunte was an ancient Greek city; today it is the largest archaeological park in Europe. In the archaeological site, on the acropolis there are some temples along with other secondary buildings, while other temples are located on a hill not far away. Many buildings are damaged due to earthquakes that occurred during the Middle Ages; however some interventions of anastylosis have allowed to reconstruct almost completely the Temple E (the so-called temple of Hera), and to raise most of one of the long sides of the Temple C. The sculptures found in the excavations have been placed above all in the National Archaeological Museum of Palermo. An exception is the most famous work, the Efebo di Selinunte, which is now exhibited at the Museo Civico di Castelvetrano.
Already famous for its two main monuments, the Doric temple and the theater, Segesta now has a new season of discoveries, due to scientific excavations aimed at restoring an overall image of the city.
The map shows the area of the Archaeological Park: the city occupied the summit of Monte Barbaro (two acropolis separated by a saddle), naturally defended by steep rock walls on the east and south sides, while the less protected side was provided in the classical age a wall with monumental doors, later replaced (during the first imperial age) by a second line of walls at a higher level. Outside the city walls, along the ancient access roads to the city, there are two important sacred places: the Doric temple (430-420 BC) and the Contrada Mango sanctuary (VI-V century BC). Outside the walls a Hellenistic necropolis was also identified. The town planning of Segesta is still under investigation: some probable roads are reported, the area of the agora and some houses. On the North Acropolis, where the theater is located, the most recent remains of Segesta are visible: the castle, the mosque and the church founded in 1442 on a multi-layered plot.
The two main churches of Palazzolo Acreide are particularly representative examples of considerable value for the overall architectural features and above all for the consistency of the decorative-sculptural apparatus that characterizes them, the result of the culture of local craftsmen, an identifying element of the Hyblean architecture of the period post-seismic (earthquake of 1693).
The basilica of St. Paul, built on the old church of St. Sophia and declared a World Heritage Site, has a Baroque façade of 3 orders, cadenced by arches and columns surmounted by Corinthian capitals. The façade is also dotted with 6 pairs of statues of the apostles. The church of San Sebastiano, located in the Piazza del Popolo, stands with a scenic staircase and with its Baroque façade of 3 orders. Inside you can admire large nineteenth-century frescoes and fine stuccos and marbles.
Another baroque jewel is the Church of the Annunciation, on whose façade four twisted twin columns, richly adorned with vine shoots and friezes, stand out. Also worthy of note are the Mother Church and the numerous noble palaces full of baroque decorations.
Also worthy of mention is the medieval Castle that existed already in 827, the year of the Muslim conquest, abandoned after the earthquake of 1693, and of which only a few ruins remain, and the archaeological area which presents the remarkable Greek theater of Akrai and the necropolis.
